Inter Agency Committee on Geomatics (IACG)
Background
The Inter Agency Committee on Geomatics (IACG) Steering Committee is comprised of Assistant Deputy Ministers (ADM) representing a number of federal government departments. The Committee recognizes that sharing geospatial data and raising the profile of geomatics within the federal family is an important catalyst towards reducing domestic and international barriers to data sharing. This activity also supports the government's interests in information and knowledge management as well as the Prime Minister's vision to connect to Canadians through the Government on-line (GOL) initiative. IACG Working Group
A working level sub-group of the IACG, consisting of members from twelve partner departments, was convened to conduct a thorough survey of geospatial data, services, and collaborative usage. Key questions and issues being addressed by the IACG Steering Committee
include:
- What data do agencies collect? (Helping to understand and identify
potential overlaps/gaps)
- Why do agencies use geomatics? (Develop linkages to critical support for
key business lines)
- Whom do agencies interface with? (Identify partnerships in federal family
and outside)
- What is the integrity of data and partnerships? (Identify vulnerabilities
and dependencies)
- What are barriers to collaboration? (Identify issues and recommend
options)
The IACG Working Group assembled ten position papers to help in
decision-making processes. IACG Working Group Position Papers
- Definition of geomatics
- Federal technical standards and infrastructure for data and software
(GeoConnections/CGDI)
- Adopt common data licenses and practices developed (GeoConnections Policy
Node)
- Governance structure for the IACG as a co-ordinating body for federal
geomatics activities
- Use of common framework data and develop a plan for expansion of themes
in the framework
- Framework data to be accessible at no cost to users, first to federal
agencies and second to all Canadians
- Offices of Primary Interest (OPIs) to be identified to act horizontally
for data themes and user groups
- National road network development and maintenance
- Performance of GeoConnections to be evaluated and follow-on plans
developed
- Security and privacy: affected departments to explore alternatives to
permit wider use of data while protecting security and privacy.
